Dominique Ansel Bakery Japan, Tokyo, Japan

Dominique Ansel Bakery Japan, Tokyo, Japan

RATING: ★★☆☆ – Good   |   PRICE: $$ - Average

Dominique Ansel’s Tokyo outfit stands in the shadow of its New York City counterpart; successful, due in part to social media but chiefly because of the infamous Cronut. We can’t help but feel that Dominique Ansel may be a one hit wonder in Tokyo; relying on a single product, the Cronut, to propel its success and its business model.

At this location, both a localized version and the original Cronut is available in addition to other specialties made famous in the Big Apple; the frozen smores and cookie shots are just some of the other delicious desserts at the café. As delicious they may be, the offerings seem like a cookie cutter franchising model instead of a bakery which pushes the innovation threshold and the overall experience pales in comparison to the main store. One also cannot ignore the copious number of guests who make a U-turn at the door when they are out of cronuts for the day (usually by 3pm), so come early and without expectations, and you might just get your much-needed sugar high for the day.
