Hotel Indigo, Bangkok, Thailand

RATING: ★★★☆ - Very Good   |   Hotel Class: Mid-range

There are countless boutique hotels in Bangkok, some while rather spectacular, others leave one craving just a little more. And although city holidays do not always justify indulgent accommodations, it is nice to come back each evening to a room with all the spoils.

Hotel Indigo has carved out a boutique niche which rivals even the most designer hotels in the city, with uber-stylish rooms, luxury amenities, superb cocktails and a breakfast array which is one of the best in Bangkok. Looks like the Indigo brand is all set to make waves in the land of smiles.

The hotel

Hotel Indigo is lavishly decorated with quirky props from the yesteryears of Thai culture, old radios and vintage musical equipment adorn the walls adding color to the space though their vibrant paint schemes. Omnipresent crystal chandeliers drop from the double volume lobby and bar ceilings, adding to the eclectic-modernized vintage which seems to be the theme of the hotel.

Indigo also features a wonderful rooftop pool, while a little small by resort standards, it is adequate for Bangkok and the panoramic views from the water’s infinity-edge more than make up for its size.

A short walk away from the Phloen Chit BTS sky train station and the swanky Central Embassy mall the hotel is in the heart of Bangkok’s shopping district and major attractions. In fact, a short walk to the east and you will find yourself right-smack in the heart of hipster town, reminiscent of Williamsburg in New York City.

The walk out of the hotel, unfortunately suffers from the uneven pavements and unruly traffic which is the city of Bangkok, so if you are traveling with less mobile individuals, you might want to book a hotel directly connected to the malls and skywalks.

The rooms are basic and comfortable with good city views and floor to ceiling windows. Despite being basic, there are small luxurious finishing touches such as the black and gold bathroom fixtures and the automated window blinds and lighting systems which adds subtle complexity and makes your stay in Hotel Indigo quirkier.

Hotel Indigo provides one of the “most-hip” hotel breakfasts in the city. In-line with Bangkok’s growing café scene, the main restaurant, Metro on Wireless, serves up an a-la carte all-day brunch menu coupled with a comprehensive breakfast buffet spread.

The a-la-carte options allow you to choose from variations of eggs, Thai-style noodles, waffles and pancakes, portions might be small, but you can order them all!

Dining Options

Apart from the main restaurant, hotel indigo also features a craft cocktail bar which reminds one of a New York City speakeasy, and a small lobby café, serving up small pastries and excellent coffee.

The experience

Hotel Indigo in Bangkok has very successfully combined boutique chic with international class hotel comforts. And a stay, even for a day, will not disappoint. Is it lacking the charm and haphazard nature of what is traditionally a small boutique hotel? Yes, perhaps a little, but Indigo has proven itself to be a great boutique brand without compromise.
