RATING: ★☆☆☆ – SATISFACTORY | PRICE: $$$$ - VERY EXPENSIVE
Angkor Wat may be Siem Reap’s claim to fame but the fine dining scene in Cambodia is buzzing with action. Restaurants have been popping up all over the city in recent years and some of them even claim to serve up gastronomic experiences. Damnak Lounge Fine Dining seems to be a worthy contender, housed in a semi-luxury hotel, spotting immaculate service and classic interiors, the restaurant has got many fundamentals right and has the potential to rise up as one of the best in the city.
However, there is huge room for improvement, the interiors for one, while elegant, they seem more suitable a club lounge for the hotel instead of one worthy of a Michelin Star and its position within the property, tucked away in the corner of an executive floor, gives us more reason to suspect that this was indeed a lounge which was cost-effectively converted into a restaurant.
The tasting menu and affordable wine pairings was good… But it lacked the bells and whistles of the other more adventurous restaurants in the city; the chef has played it very safe with conventional dishes and an uninspired (safe again) wine pairing menu. This by no means concludes that the meal was not satisfactory, it was quite the opposite and a dinner at Damnak Lounge Fine Dining will no-doubt be a very enjoyable one. That said, we can’t help but feel less than fully satisfied after the meal.
