RATING: ★☆☆☆ – SATISFACTORY   |   PRICE: $$ - AVERAGE

Located in central Myeong-dong, HaDongKwan (하동관) is a legendary traditional Korean restaurant and the destination to savor the best and most authentic Gomtang in Seoul.

Boasting snaking lines of customers every day and only opening until 4:00pm or till they are sold out, the restaurant stays true to their original soup recipe and it still remains unchanged since the original restaurant opened in 1939.

Their secret recipe? According to our sources, beef and ox bones are slowly simmered for over 24 hours with the best quality Korean radishes and root vegetables thrown in for good measure. So labor intensive is their process that HaDongKwan can only make one gigantic pot of broth each day, which also explains why they close after being sold out.

Despite the long lines, waiting at HaDongKwan never takes more than 5 minutes as most of their customers, busy office workers, literally guzzle down the bowls of soup and rice and leave within ten minutes of being served.

What is Gomtang

If you are unfamiliar with Gomtang, it’s basically a milky-smooth beef broth, made by simmering beef and ox bones for hours and hours, served sliced over quality rice and with a generous heap of green onions.

So remember to be early for lunch and to eat it as the locals do. Mushy, with a heavy pinch of salt and generous handful of green onions.
