Mountain side Villa living amidst cascading treetops

Perched on the side of a ‘mountain’ the Ubud Hanging Gardens has been on just about every internet list for its amazing swimming pool and breathtaking views. Being an Ubud institution is a rather daunting task, we visit the hanging gardens to see if the place truly is as magical as the internet makes it out to be.

The Hanging Gardens has been around for ages and the resort has stood the test of time. While slightly dated, the space does exude the same amount of bravado as other, more plush resorts which have sprung up in Ubud, Bali.

As secluded as it is; a good 30 mins bus ride from the Ubud town centre, the Hanging Gardens has all the amenities you would need in a modern luxury resort. The finishings are superb and as one would expect (from all that internet hype) the view of rolling treetops cascading into the evening sunset is so beautiful it would wow even the most seasoned Bali-’holidayier’.

An amazing architectural feat, the superstructure is perched at a steep angle on the hillside, this is probably hard enough to build even without the amazing infinity pool shaped to contour in gentle curves on the middle tier of the hotel.

The pool is a little smaller than what reviews online seem to say about it. But it was as pictured and had one of the best views overlooking the entire hill-range.

During the monsoon period, the resort often attracts swarms of large king ants. Attracted to the resorts bright lights, these bugs are not dangerous but can be annoying at times, especially when they end up in your evening cup of tea. But this is all part of the experience which is the Ubud Hanging Gardens

Stepping into the Villas, you are immediately greeted with classically designed Balinese forest-styled interiors. The room oozed of wooden features, from the gorgeous 4-poster king bed with matching mosquito nets to the custom built bathtub which extends to the outer balcony; this seems to mimic the famous infinity pool of the Ubud hanging Gardens… yes you get a mini one of those in every room.

Each villa comes with its own private infinity edge swimming pool, the perfect space to experience the sights and sounds of the rainforest.

Remember to call the front desk if your pool’s water is a bit chilly, the pools are heated and sometimes they might forget to turn up the heat.  You mustn't underestimate how cold it gets up in the mountain

Ubud Hanging Gardens has but one restaurant in the whole compound, while you can consider the afternoon tea spot a small quaint cafe with a tremendous balcony, the breakfast restaurant is where 90% of your meals would be.

Overlooking the tree tops which the resort is built within, the main restaurant serves up a wonderful spread of local delights and a selection of western favourites for breakfast. While not stingy in selection and and immaculately fresh, the breakfast spread is far from being the most luxurious in Bali.

Get the platter at dinner, its a selection of delicious local morsels you are sure to enjoy.

Of course, you are booked at the Ubud Hanging Gardens, you’re not here to stuff your face with local grub, but rather to observe some R&R in the immaculate sanctuary which the resorts has been built to achieve. Achieve is an understatement, Ubud Hanging Gardens excels in being the perfect rainforest heaven.

A stay at the Ubud Hanging Gardens is a must if you are a frequent visitor to Bali; not only to visit one of the world’s most unique hotel swimming pools, but rather also to visit one of the most architecturally stunning resorts ever built and to be fully immersed into the ‘rainforest zen’ experience which the Hanging Gardens excels in.

Sure there are other quaint resorts in Bali where you can get your ’zen-on’, but like a rose in a pile of dandelions, there’s nothing quite like Ubud Hanging Gardens
