Omen おめん, Kyoto, Japan

RATING: ★★☆☆ – GOOD   |   PRICE: $$$ - EXPENSIVE

Authentic Kyoto experiences are hard to come by in the city these days, especially since the hordes of geisha hunting tourist have started to swamp the streets of Gion. However, one can still seek some refuge at Omen where they serve up delicious Kyoto Style noodles which while similar to Udon have adopted distinctive Kyoto vibes.

Omen are thick wheat flour noodles served cold with a hearty dipping broth, an assortment of fresh vegetables and tempura; the broth is robust and more akin to a hotpot once the vegetables are added to it. Seasonal specialties like the Kyoto duck meatballs served with hot omen noodles and yuzu were well received and follows traditional cooking methods.

If you are looking to have a taste of the real Kyoto then a visit to Omen must be on your to-do list when you’re in town.
