The InterContinental, Singapore

Timeless Peranakan Luxury is all in the details

RATING: ★★★★ - OUTSTANDING   |   CATEGORY: LUXURY HOTEL

Nestled in the center of Bugis, the heart of Singapore’s cultural and heritage intersections, Intercontinental Singapore proves that the spirit of timeless luxury is still alive and well with their service excellence, attention to detail, charming interiors and culture to go all out to pamper their guests.

InterContinental Singapore, being a city hotel doesn't have a sprawling compound, but what it lacks in size it makes up with local Peranakan charm, a blend of local Malay and Chinese cultures. That, infused with modern luxurious features, which when combined has created a rather timeless local-contemporary vibe which is unique to the hotel.

Lobby, club lounge and corridor walk-ways follow a locally influenced design aesthetic, with heavy usage of marble tiles, deep-brown solid-wood beams and subtle placement of yellow and green Peranakan pottery & vases.

Although not on the main shopping belt, the hotel along with the two connecting malls and street markets were designed as major mixed development. InterContinental Singapore is in close proximity to museums, street markets and must see heritage sites, it also sits above a major subway interchange, allowing for easy access to the green and blue downtown lines. You’ll never be short of entertainment or food options in Bugis. In particular, Platypus Kitchen (in the mall next door) is the best option for a great meal in a trendy restaurant nearby.

Views from the rooms in the main building are superb

You cannot ask for a better location than InterContinental Singapore for your trip to this pint sized city state.

Accommodations and Rooms

Fresh from a much deserved renovation, the rooms at the hotel are fully deserving of its 5-star rating; spacious, comfortable and complete with all the amenities you’d expect in any modern hotel. Shophouse suite and junior suite, in particular, are incredibly large with a separate living room, closet area and bedroom. Some of these suites also come with dual sinks, however, in our experience it does not seem to be a standard feature; a little like their Nespresso machine offering.

Small details like dual USB & HDMI ports, comfortable blueish-hue night lights and the provision of four bath towels just showcases the extreme attention to detail that goes into the planning and operations of this hotel.

Unlike many older IHG properties, the TV entertainment interface is fully integrated into the hotel’s housekeeping system which makes calling for extra amenities or requesting for a buckwheat pillow super convenient; just scroll to service-order on the ‘tele’ and your butler will bring it to you.

Food & Drink

With three fine dining restaurants, one for each cuisine; Japanese, Chinese and International, there is no lack of good food at the hotel.

Ash & Elm which doubles up to host the breakfast buffet spread is an eclectic well-balanced restaurant which boasts massive ceiling skylights which flood the interiors with glorious natural light during breakfast and lunch hours.

We are going on record by saying that the breakfast waffles at InterContinental Singapore are the very best in Singapore. The waffles here are #1 in our books, beating every hipster cafe or trendy new brunch restaurant out there.

Chikuyotei, the Japanese restaurant, serves up excellent Unagi, grilled eel, centric edo style Japanese cuisine. While prices can be a little steep, this restaurant is an institution in Singapore and the only Japanese restaurant solely specializing in grilled eel.

Club InterContinental

The Club at InterContiental Singapore is special. Returning here for each time feels like home away from home, It just feels right. The staff make it a point to address you by name, remember your drink preferences and can sometimes even second-guess your mood and requests. Also this is one of the few Club lounges where happy-hour actually means bespoke cocktails prepared and delivered to your table with superior canapes and a small buffet. A wonderful addition to the hotel.

The Experience

Perhaps it is the familiar smell of amazing waffles in the morning, the pampering of gifts, fruit and upgrades which comes from being an IHG Ambassador member or collapsing into their signature bed after a tough workday in town.

The InterContinental Singapore and its welcoming staff have always been there, day-in and day-out. Everyday. Setting the standards to be at the pinnacle of high-service and hospitality in Singapore.

Insider’s Tip

  • If you’ve booked a shophouse room, request for one overlooking the pool on the third floor. It comes with a small rock garden
  • Room 348 is a corner view shophouse suite; the largest
  • Room 401 seems to be one of the bigger junior suites
  • Room 254 and 354 are by far the Best
